The Firefighter Basic Operations Associate in Applied Science degree is designed to serve the needs of students interested in obtaining the certifications/licenses required for an entry level position in the fire services. Students pursuing the A.A.S. degree are required to complete 15 credit hours of general education, 18 credit hours of Fire Science Technology core courses, 15 hours of Fire Science Technology electives and 14 hours of non- FST requirements. Students will be provided approved personal protective safety equipment by CLC. This equipment consists of firefighter turnouts (coat and pants), firefighting footwear, suspenders, gloves, hood, safety glasses, fire helmet, and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). All equipment will comply with current National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. Students must consult with a Fire Science Technology adviser to plan and schedule their program.
Firefighter Basic Operations Requirements
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
To be admitted to this program the student will pick up an application in December for the following academic year. The packets can be picked up in the Business and Social Science Division, Room T302. Approval will be based on conditions that include completion of the Firefighter Basic Operations application, panel interview, proof of a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), successful completion of a background/criminal investigation that may include fingerprinting. Also students must have a valid NFPA 1001 medical physical, acknowledgment that the student will become a member of the fire department assigned by the College and the acknowledgment that they are required to provide scheduled staffing for the assigned fire department.
HEALTH PHYSICAL
Medical physical will meet NFPA Standard 1582, Chapter 6 (Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments/Medical Evaluation of Candidates), including qualitative and quantitative respirator use evaluation.
To complete an A.A.S., students are strongly encouraged to meet with an Academic Success Advisor to identify coursework that will meet degree requirements.
