Description

This course is a continuation of History of East Asia to 1800. This course will survey the history of East Asia in general and in particular the histories of China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Students will examine the impact of domestic and global conditions on the development of East Asia broadly and these four countries specifically. It will explore the growth and effects of modernization and nationalism on the region in the 19th and 20th centuries. Emphasis will be placed on examining the efforts of countries in the region to deal with western encroachment and imperialism in the 19th century and the efforts of these countries to establish independence and develop in the 20th and 21st centuries.
